Spotlight on NPs

Spotlight on NPs is a weekly article that highlights exciting achievements and activities of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members.

“Nurse practitioners play a critical role in health care delivery across the nation, especially in rural and medically underserved communities,” according to AANP’s Maine State Representative Valerie Fuller.  “With this experience, [NPs] can help the Department of Veterans Affairs meet its challenge of improving veterans’ access to timely, high-quality health care.”  Read the Op-Ed.        

The International Nurses Association recognized AANP member Ariana Rabinovicz for her passion and dedication by honoring her among Worldwide Leaders in Healthcare. Learn more.           

Citing high patient satisfaction rates and nearly 50 years of peer-reviewed, independent studies that associate positive outcomes with care provided by NPs, AANP’s Minnesota State Representative Brian Goodroad urged the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to give veterans full and direct access to NP care.  Read the Op-Ed.

Congratulations to AANP member Anne Lalonde, who opened her own clinic following updated practice legislation in New York state.  Learn more.    

AANP members Jill Carter and Suzie Lutts recently opened a new house call health care service to provide regular medical visits to help control patients’ chronic conditions. “Getting early intervention in the home facilitates greater quality of care. It’s something we can do and it’s something we’re passionate about,” Carter said.  Read the article.           

Heather Norfleet, an AANP member, has a heart for helping the homeless.  Norfleet said the health needs of the homeless are many; the wear and tear of always living outside is punishing, she said. But many of her patients also deal with high blood pressure, lack of proper nutrition, arthritis, diabetes and addiction. Giving them basic health care can set the stage for them to rebuild their lives.  Learn more.

AANP Fellows Teresa Gardner and Paula Meade and immediate past president Angela Golden were members of the Remote Area Medical volunteer team that cared for patients at this annual clinic in Wise, VA. Read more about the clinic and patients in need.
