Spotlight on NPs is a weekly article that highlights exciting achievements and activities of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members.
Congratulations to AANP member Sandra Leaders, who was honored as the Nurse of the Year by the Iowa Nurses Association. Sandi volunteered with Operation Walk Chicago on mission trips to China, Ecuador, India, Nepal and Vietnam. “She is invariably the first one on the bus in the morning and the last one to leave in the evening. You literally have to drag her away from her patients. Her compassion and empathy for the patients is unparalleled and no interpreter is needed to communicate her loving and caring nature,” other volunteers say. Read the press release.
AANP member Erin Tolbert discussed Ebola Virus preparedness and protocol on Fox News. Watch the video.
Cate Fuqua, an AANP member, was featured in two local news video interviews regarding Ebola Virus. She discussed reactions of health care workers to two nurses being diagnosed with Ebola Virus and safety protocol being taught to nursing students.
AANP member and dean of the University of Kentucky College of Nursing Dr. Janie Heath wrote an article about the nursing profession and how to help nurses stay empowered and engaged. “We marginalize nursing when media outlets sensationalize the symptoms of nurse turnover and ignore the root causes, said Dr. Heath. “Systems that value nurses are systems that bring value to patients and their families and are recognized as authentic healthy working environments.”
Dr. Cindy Cooke, AANP president elect, was featured in an article highlighting her election, role as a nurse practitioner, and hopes for AANP and the NP profession. “My goal is to further advance the role of nurse practitioners. We are a major force in providing health care in this country,” Dr. Cooke said.
