During Black History Month each February, the nation is given a special opportunity to recognize the contributions of African-Americans in every walk of life. This year, AANP Fellow Dr. Debra Barksdale was profiled in an article for Nurse.com. Dr. Barksdale is a remarkable clinician, leader and role model. An Advance for NPs & PAs article weighed the costs and benefits of additional education and featured content from several AANP members, including Dr. Doreen Cassarino, Dr. Kahlil Demonbreun, Tejon Woods, and AANP Utah State Representative Lee Moss.
The importance of full practice authority for nurse practitioners was illustrated in an article that described how NPs expand access to health care services, especially in rural areas. AANP Fellow, Gwen Witzel, was featured in the article.

Congratulations to AANP member Patsi Nystrom, who was honored for her volunteer services at the Estherville Free Clinic. An article about Ms. Nystrom was written in recognition of her retirement and 14 years of service.
Helene Reilly, an AANP member, was mentioned in an article about Go Red for Women Day. According to the article, “Since the Go Red for Women campaign started in 2004, 300 fewer women die from heart disease each day.”
AANP member Susan Catchings was pictured in an article about influenza rates in North Carolina, where the flu season has been especially deadly, with 152 fatalities to date.

AANP member Dr. Kristi Henderson is an innovative leader who demonstrates how effective nurse practitioners are in improving the health of our nation. Dr. Henderson recently completed a TEDx talk , and her work is expected to be featured in a PBS documentary this spring. Dr. Henderson was also featured in an article about a telehealth command center that connects health care providers in Jackson, MS, to patients across the state.
