Spotlight on NPs is a weekly article that highlights exciting achievements and activities of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members.

AANP Region 3 Director Susan Schrand wrote a letter to the editor of Penn Live that urged lawmakers to pass legislation to expand patient access to health care by eliminating outdated policies related to nurse practitioners. Schrand wrote, “legislators should retire linked licensure and ensure Pennsylvania’s patients have access to timely, high-quality, patient-centered health care.”

September is Pain Awareness Month, a time when nurse practitioners focus on the importance of diagnosing, treating and managing patients’ chronic pain. Read this timely Huffington Post article by AANP Fellow Capt. James LaVelle Dickens to learn five steps to help conquer chronic pain.

A US News report on ways that graduate degrees in nursing pay off quoted AANP president Dr. Cindy Cooke and AANP member Sara Marlow, who is also known as @MissFNP on Twitter. Read what Cooke, Marlow and others had to say about employment opportunities for new nurse practitioners.

Congratulations to AANP member Gwyn Parris-Atwell, who received a 2016 Mid-Atlantic Region Nurse.com GEM Award.  Parris-Atwell is an active United States Air Force Reservist and Chief Nurse to the Squadron Commander at McGuire AFB.  She won in the category of Excellence in Education and Mentorship and was recognized for her unparalleled leadership and clinical and mentorship capabilities. AANP member Thanh Nguyen was quoted in a second MedCity News article about the return on investment (ROI) of telehealth. According to the article, “Nguyen said while presenting evidence that telemedicine is helping healthcare achieve the triple aim of improved patient experience and population health at a lower cost. ‘It will be interesting to see where the bottom line will be and if this is paying off,’ she said. ‘I know we have saved lives by having these services available to our patient population.’”

Congratulations to AANP member Cris Custer, who was recognized by the University of Wisconsin (UW) for providing personalized care.  The honor was related to UW’s Project 72 initiative, which highlights the work of graduates.  “Through the past 21 years, I have been able to focus on the promotion of health as well as the prevention, early detection and optimal management of diseases,” Custer said about her role. A Rheumatoid Arthritis News article covered AANP’s request that patients and health care providers work together to ensure that chronic pain is treated properly. The article quoted AANP President Dr. Cindy Cooke, who said, “Patients living with acute and chronic pain need prompt and reliable access to their health care provider of choice and effective pain relief. National Pain Awareness Month serves as a reminder that nearly one-third of Americans suffer daily from the debilitating condition of chronic pain.”

Congratulations to AANP member Jenna Cicchillo who was named Gem of the Year by the Mahoning County Medical Society Alliance.  According to the press release, the annual award recognizes an individual who serves the community with distinction.
