Spotlight on NPs is a weekly article that highlights exciting achievements and activities of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members.

AANP President Dr. Cindy Cooke appeared on DCW50’s NewsPlus to advocate on behalf of veterans seeking medical assistance through the VA. Watch what Dr. Cooke had to say about nurse practitioners and the VA’s proposed APRN rule.

AANP Fellow Dr. Richard Ricciardi wrote a blog for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality that describes several steps clinicians can take to increase patient safety in ambulatory care.  According to Ricciardi, “Safety issues in ambulatory care settings differ substantively from the hospital setting. Events may be the result of fragmented care or from a delayed or inaccurate diagnosis, a lack of followup on tests, or inappropriate use of two more medications due to deficiencies in medication reconciliation and care coordination.” Read more.

“I use the best tools of conventional medicine and the best tools of holistic medicine to help people make lifestyle changes to become healthier,” AANP member Seth McLaughlin told attendees of a community health forum. He discussed the benefits of incorporating herbs into people’s diets and stressed the importance of eating food that comes from farms rather than factories.  Learn more.

AANP member Angie Howald was quoted in an article about a heart-healthy cooking demonstration that marked the opening of a new Women’s Cardiac Risk Clinic in Anderson, IN. She shared the importance of educating patients to help prevent heart disease.

AANP Fellow Nancy Campbell-Heider is among 22 AANP members to be inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing later this month. AAN Fellows are recognized for their extraordinary nursing careers and are selected for their contributions to nursing and health care and their influence on health policy and the health and well-being of patients.  Congratulations to all!  Read the press release.

Congratulations to AANP Fellow Susan Calloway, who was recently awarded the Texas Nurse Practitioner of the Year award.  Texas Nurse Practitioner bestows the award every year to a distinguished nurse practitioner who demonstrates excellence in his field of work and is thought of as a role model in the nursing profession. Thanks to AANP Oregon State Representative Mandy McKimmy, who manned the AANP booth at the 39th Annual Nurse Practitioners of Oregon Education Conference in mid-October. We appreciate all that Ms. McKimmy and other state reps do to support nurse practitioners and their national membership organization – AANP.
