Spotlight on NPs is a weekly article that highlights exciting achievements and activities of American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) members.
AANP Fellow Capt. James LaVelle Dickens wrote an article for the Huffington Post Black Voices column describing five ways that we can honor our veterans. Dickens asked that readers “Ask Congress and the VA to reduce wait times in the VA health system.” He suggested that one way to achieve that goal would be to move forward with the VA’s proposed rule that could give veterans full and direct access to nurse practitioners employed by VA facilities.
AANP members Ellen Mering, Amanda Volker and Dr. Susan Eley were among the authors of an article in Advance for NPs & PAs that reminded readers “height loss is a key marker for osteoporosis.” According to the article, “new studies show that height is often overestimated, particularly by perimenopausal, menopausal, and postmenopausal women, when they are self-reporting it to their health care provider.”
Congratulations to AANP member Colleen Barry, who recently received an Award of Excellence from the Ohio Association of Advanced Practice Nurses. The award is given annually to an APRN who has demonstrated excellence in professional development, clinical skill, innovative practice, academics, political action or interdisciplinary interaction. Two recent articles discussed outdated practice regulations for nurse practitioners in Virginia and Illinois. AANP members Jenni Fellman and Cindy Fagan, who is the Virginia Council of NPs Government Affairs Chairperson, were quoted in an article about collaborative agreements that negatively impact patients’ access to care in their state.
Similarly, on October 26, The Okawville Times (print only) ran a story about AANP Illinois State Representative Dr. Julie Adkins. The end of a collaborative agreement caused the clinic where Adkins had worked for 15 years to close, leaving 2,000 of her patients without access to care. Adkins responded by opening an NP-owned clinic to care for her patients. Learn more about nurse practice laws and regulations in your state by reviewing AANP’s State Practice Environment Map.
NP leaders help raise awareness of the nurse practitioner role, like AANP member Vicki Holzapfel did when she explained the history and importance of the NP role to attendees of a Rotary Club meeting in her community. Read more. #NPsLead
In “The Dish on Diabetes,” the effects of diabetes on physical and mental health were discussed. AANP member Erin Carlile was quoted in the article.
Did you participate in the Lunch n’ Learn featuring AANP member Dr. Gordon Mattimoe last month? The Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (TCPi) webinar highlighted Mattimoe’s research regarding ways the alignment of the Chronic Care Model (CCM), evidence-based guidelines and health information technology can be used to design and implement a robust quality improvement program to manage hypertension in rural underserved populations. If you missed the live event, be sure to watch it now.
Mark your calendars for a special National Diabetes Awareness Month Lunch n’ Learn webinar from TCPi featuring AANP member Dr. Kristine Batty. Batty will discuss how her practice leverages newly available performance incentive payments to capitalize on services her practice has historically provided for free. Register today.
